Why I’m not worried about Days of Future Past, part 2

First, some Singer quotes—

“This is the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where their relationship took a wrong turn. There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from X-Men will figure into the plot, though I don’t want to say which ones. There will be a lot of new mutants and a great villain.”

- (2009) (aka back when he was going to direct Magneto: Origins/XMFC)

“Just doing younger mutants is not enough,” said the director. “The story needs to be more than that. I love the relationship between Magneto and Xavier, these two men who have diametrically opposite points of view but still manage to be friends - to a point. They are the ultimate frenemies.”

(2010), this one is interesting since apparently he was getting flak for focusing too much on Prof x/Magneto.

So far 4 out of 4 X-Men movies have AMAZING Erik/Charles scenes chock full with subtext. XMFC is, admittedly, supreme in that regard, but here’s the thing—all of the critics and fans universally agreed that Fassbender and McAvoy’s chemistry was the best part of XMFC. The whole movie hinged on it and they made every less-good aspect of that movie fly, and they KNOW that. Because that is ALWAYS what people say. POPULAR CULTURE AT LARGE ACKNOWLEDGES THE CENTRALITY OF OUR OTP TO THE MOVIES. guys, look at the quotes above. Think about any Fassbender or McAvoy quote you’ve ever read about XMFC. They get it. They ALL get it, from Singer down to the lowliest key grip. There’s going to be Cherik in this thing. There’s going to be TWICE as much since we now have young AND old Erik and Charles.

Think of the possibilities. No matter what they do the romantic pathos is going to be coming out our ears:

- Young Magneto goes to the future, talks to his old self, finds out he kills Charles and is DEVASTATED.

- Old Charles comes back in time to sadly describe the dystopia to himself and his charges, but also brings a message of hope—he knows young Charles is angry right now but he’s the only one who has any hope of getting through to Erik and saving the world/their relationship.

- Kitty travels in time and comes back to tell Charles that old Magneto was weirdly apologetic? Also he said “I love you, old friend, forgive me for not telling you that sooner.”

OH THE POSSIBILITIES—I COULD WRITE 30 DIFFERENT FICS ABOUT THIS SHIT.

And that’s the other thing. There will definitely be romantic subtext because there is always subtext and they are putting it in there on purpose. Will it be the beautiful angst epic we’re dreaming of that ends with reconciliation and a full-on sex scene…? Probably not. But the official canon is never exactly what we want. That’s why we write and read fic.

I will say this, Singer’s generally more somber aesthetic will suit Charles’ bleak mood and the dystopia themes very well. Also remembered that the XMFC cast put in many if the best bits and humor themselves (like James making Charles a shit flirt) and we still have that same cast. The pieces are in place to do a movie that is ambitious, makes a ton of money, and still has the Erik/Charles relationship at its heart; just as the other four movies (despite being ensembles) all orbited around them and their scenes.

We’ll see what happens, but this is why I’m not worried at all. Yet.

You give me hope, oh my god, so much hope! I have read some interviews, but not those two you mentioned right at the beginning. I was making embarrassing squealing noises while reading your post, I was actually even throwing a couch pillow on the wall, because it made me so excited.  I always try to let my hopes stay low for my ships, but it really seems that Cherik has the best chances to become (once more) subtitled canon. God, I love you for this, because my “SCARED” level regarding them and  XMDOFP was at a maximum until a few minutes ago.
